Constance Stubbs ’ ever-widening reputation rests mainly on a wonderful gift for drawing, etching and portraiture, thus combining technical virtuosity with originality of composition through her perceptive and compassionate portrayal of everyday life.

Her innovative collage technique, using acrylic or watercolour with gouache, chalk and pastel, builds up delicate layers of radiant and exotically coloured textures on canvas or board.

One wonders if Constance Stubbs’ immense ability and phenomenal draughtsmanship is in part a legacy of her assumed ancestor George Stubbs (1724-1806) the great equestrian and portrait painter. Constance Stubbs is indeed a worthy successor. This same rare talent has certainly ensured her a place in the official story of post-war British art, which is beginning to acknowledge the work of those figurative artists who have persevered with there own vision with sincerity and dedication.

In 1987 The Arts Review critic wrote of her pictures then showing at the Oxford Gallery‘ ‘(They) have about them a kind of modern monumentality that bears witness to the pains and pleasures of human existence.’

‘Constance Stubbs is probably the most exciting British painter today. Without doubt, she is amongst the foremost ranks of portraitists.’

Sir Hugh Casson CH, KCVO President of the Royal Academy 1976-1984
